Top 5 South African Family Accommodation

In Epic Accommodation, Epic Traveller Reviews

We received this wonderful feedback from recent travellers after their epic South African family holiday. The family group of six included grandparents, parents and two children.

“We enjoyed a wonderful holiday in South Africa in April. A bit of rain every now and then, a downpour in Addo, but in general lovely weather. Coldest day was 19C and the hottest day was 40C. It was a well-balanced trip with special moment for all of us. Thanks so much for all your recommendations. Well done! We really enjoyed the whole experience from start to finish.” Sander, Netherlands, May 2017.

This is their feedback and wonderful images of their top 5 South African family accommodation:

Glen Avon Family Lodge in Cape Town

Glen Avon Lodge is a lovely place with very friendly staff and quite possibly the favourite of grandpa and grandma like you predicted. We enjoyed a spacious cottage with the kids and no neighbours that could be bothered by their noise! The cottage was situated on the street side so we did hear some morning traffic. Cape Town peak traffic to the centre of town is not great and can double travel time.

Dungbeetle River Cottage near Addo Elephant Park

We then flew to the malaria-free Eastern Cape where we stayed at Dungbeetle River Cottage. Fantastic breakfast and beautiful cottages. It’s not a very exciting town but we enjoyed the malaria-free safari in Addo Elephant National Park and a trip to the Alexandria dunefields. The sand sledding was great fun for all of us and together with the animal sightings in Addo, these were one of the highlights of our trip.

Family Accommodation at That Place in the Crags

Moving along the Garden Route we stayed at That Place self-catering cottage near to Plettenberg Bay in the Crags. This was the kids favourite house! Lots of things to do for them, a super farm stall close by, stunning beach at the nearby Natures Valley where we of course took the provided fishing nets to catch little fish. I must say we were a bit intimidated by the welcoming committee consisting of Jo and her collection of 9 very enthusiastic dogs jumping with joy against our car while barking loudly! We were very happy to meet Jo, the owner. She’s great! For my parents the downstairs bedroom wasn’t very convenient since they had to come up at night (chilly) for the toilet. For us it would have been fine but we stayed in one of the upstairs rooms next to the kids room.

De Zeekoe Family Guest Farm near Oudtshoorn

We then turned inland to the Little Karoo where we stayed at De Zeekoe Guest Farm near Oudtshoorn. A stunning setting, beautiful rooms and great food, definitely a must for everyone visiting the Karoo. The meerkat safari was superb. I couldn’t get enough of it and enjoyed it two days in a row! I really recommend this experience.

Family Accommodation at Val du Charron in Wellington

Last but not least we enjoyed our stay in the Cape winelands at Val du Charron. Since they were fully booked my parents were upgraded to the 5* Coach House. This was a very pleasant surprise and they were over the moon and thoroughly enjoyed this luxury. The family room missed a bit of cupboard space and our bed wasn’t the most comfortable one I’ve ever slept in, a bit small and with a spring mattress. The restaurants on the property were excellent and the staff was really nice and super attentive, really sweet people. The view was breathtaking.
