That Place & That Wine: Plettenberg Bay
That Place is one of those special places that has enough atmosphere to put a smile on even the most grumpiest of traveller. We’ve thought about not sharing this information to just keep this special place to ourselves, but we’re just not that kind of people!
In a nutshell: That Place is a self-catering property that can sleep up to six people in three bedrooms. There is an outdoor pool, a sauna and a spectacular view which even includes elephants in the sanctuary across the valley. You’ll find the house in a large garden, surrounded by vineyards, just outside of the seaside village of Plettenberg Bay on South Africa’s Garden Route.
That Place is simply one of those places where you instantly feel at home from the moment you walk onto that patio, or as we say in Afrikaans ‘die lekker stoep.’ There are two areas to this large patio, one near the fireplace with lots of places to relax and the other with a lovely wooden table that just begs for friends or family to have a good time. Perfectly sunny for afternoon and evening meals.
We love the colourful features, quirky wooden creations and the thoughtful details such as rolled newspaper to start the indoor fire when needed in winter.
The house has two levels. On the main level there is a spacious open-plan lounge and kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The kids room is packed with toys and teddies and the artwork created by guests gets laminated and put on the fridge.
The master bedroom has great views across the valley. Below the master bedroom is the third bedroom with a double bed. This bedroom is accessible via stairs from the outside front patio so it suits couples, older children and teenagers that need their space!
The view from the front verandah of the house is great. You look across the lush valley and wake up to the sounds of birds. Actually, you also wake up to some unusual animal sounds. We just couldn’t figure out what they were so we asked the awesome and very hospitable owner who lives in the house nearby. She cleared up that mystery over a cappuccino. The unusual sound came from a howler monkey that happily lives in the nearby Monkeyland, a sanctuary for rescued primates and one of the many great places to visit. Only in Africa!
Another great thing about That Place is that there are so many things fun things to do in the area. Some of our favourites are:
- Wine tasting and lunch at Bramon Winery
- Hanging out the primates at Monkeyland
- Learning about Africa’s wild cats at Teniqua
- Walking in the forest with the birds at Birds of Eden
- Discovering how huge elephants really are at the Elephant Sanctuary
- Riding horses across the countryside from Hog Hollow
- Relaxing on the many nearby beaches
Ask us for more great suggestions. We’re always happy to help.
And lastly, That Place owners Jo and David have just released their own wine, aptly named That Wine! We highly recommend buying a few bottles to enjoy during your stay.
