The picturesque Cape Winelands are set amidst towering mountains, rolling vineyards and open farmland. A countryside escape for those who enjoy fine wine, delicious food, golf, wellness and outdoor activities. Popular towns include Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Wellington and Hermanus.
Combines well with Cape Town, the Garden Route and a safari. Ideally spend two to three days exploring. The weather is similar to Cape Town but about 5 degrees hotter in the summer.
The Cape Winelands is a scenic region stretching east from Cape Town. Stellenbosch is a 45-minute drive from Cape Town. Getting around the many villages is safe and easy on foot or using a taxi. To travel outside or between towns you will need to rent a car, take a taxi or we can arrange a private vehicle and experienced guide/driver. We create superb tailor-made tours to enjoy the area.
WINE & FOOD
The Cape Winelands is the wine and culinary capital of South Africa. There are a wide variety of excellent wine estates offering tastings and tours. Most are open for tastings from Monday to Friday from 9-5 and on Saturdays from 9-1. Many estates include excellent restaurants. There are also superb eateries in the villages. Locally grown produce and seafood are particularly good. Be sure to try traditional Cape Malay cuisine.
The Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Somerset West areas of the Cape Winelands offer the best options for golf. Our favourite courses include Pearl Valley, Erinvale and De Zalze. We offer tailor-made packages for golfers and small groups.
CULTURE & HISTORY
An excellent way to learn about the areas rich history is by joining a walking tour, going on a trip to a local community, visiting any of the museums or enjoying a show. Local culture is focused on sport, outdoor activities, a good braai (barbeque), music, art, theatre and dance. Join in and experience first hand the warmth and hospitality South Africa is known for.
Lots of sunshine and good weather mean that you may want to include some of the wide variety of outdoor activities on offer in the Cape Winelands. These include mountain biking through the vineyards, guided hikes, Segway tours, horse riding and hot air ballooning.
SPAS & WELLNESS
There are excellent spas and wellness treatments available, ranging from glitzy to esoteric. Look out for local offerings such as Vinotherapy treatments, inspired by the natural benefits of the grape, particularly the local Pinotage varietal.
Locally produced and hand-made items can be found in the boutiques and markets particularly in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
NIGHTLIFE & ENTERTAINMENT
Look out for festivals and shows at venues such as the outdoor Oude Libertas and Spier Amphitheaters near Stellenbosch. Nightlife options in the smaller Cape Winelands villages are more limited than in larger cities. Most centres around restaurants, wine bars and a few live music venues.
The area offers many child and family friendly activities. Some of our favourites are a visit to Butterfly World, a Segway tour in the vineyards and discovering birds at the Eagle Encounter. Ask us about family-friendly restaurants and wine estates plus the best accommodation options with children.
