South Africa: A Trip of a Lifetime
We love what we do and we love it even more when our clients connect with the magic of Africa. We were delighted to receive this feedback and wonderful pictures from recent guests who enjoyed a tailor-made KwaZulu Sea & Safari trip. If you are interested in a similar holiday or would like help planning your trip, please get in touch.
“Thank you so much, Yvonne. We really experienced the best trip in our lives. No doubt. The sequence was perfect: starting in the Drakensberg mountains, then to the Dolphin coast, St Lucia, Hluhluwe and finishing with a safari in the Timbavati.
We wouldn’t have wanted it the other way around. In fact: I would suggest to offer the trip only this way, counter-clockwise, for increasing enthusiasm (and that was already sky high at Antbear Lodge). We met people doing the trip the other way around and weren’t that impressed with Hluhuwe any more after visiting Kruger. We were still in awe at that time and it only got better.
And stories…. where to begin?!
Our start in the Drakensberg was fantastic. Antbear Lodge is awesome. The people are very friendly, the food is delicious and the view of the sunset is stunning. A beautiful place to start the journey through South Africa. We focussed on wildlife and the beauty of nature and wanted enough time to relax and fully experience the wildlife. We skipped Cape Town (we’ll do that later ).
So many stories to tell… what about the many whales we saw while lying on the beach at St Lucia and Cape Vidal? Humpbacks jumping out of the water and slapping their fins on the surface of the water! Of course we paid them a visit by boat later (that took some time because the moment the tractor would launch our boat in the heavy Indian Ocean waves it ran out of diesel… yes, we are in Africa!).
Our close encounter with three rhinos while taking a side road in iSimangaliso Wetland Park late in the afternoon was our first magic wildlife moment. There were many to come…
We paid a visit to Umthombo in Durban to meet the complete other side of South Africa. My father and sister do a lot to help this fantastic organisation that gives the street children of Durban a chance to build up a future (and with success!). Very inspiring!
Quite a contrast to our fantastic apartment at Sheffield Beach where we could see the whales and dolphins travelling. A beautiful sight. In fact, we saw whales everyday we took a look at the ocean (either from the beach or 50 m high overlooking the ocean).
The hospitality of Adrian and Marie at Kwalucia Private Safari Retreat in St Lucia is unsurpassed… We certainly gained weight the days they took care of us and exchanged words in Afrikaans and Dutch (the wonderful word ‘seekoeikoei’!). What a fantastic location and friendliness. The children felt homesick when we left!
Another highlight was our four days at Umlani Bush Camp in the Timbavati. We had 18 elephants lunching under the boardwalk when we were having lunch ourselves. We could’ve touched the animals! We met lions every day, leopards and wild dogs on a hunt, rhino’s grazing next to our car, 30 elephants showing up at a pool including a day old calf. A lioness with 4 week old cubs. One night we slept in a tree house that is completely open on four sides and heard the hyenas howl in the middle of the night. The next day we found out why and witnessed a near fight between lions and hyena’s over a kill. We could do game drives forever…
Our last day was spent on a sunlit Panorama Route with stunning views of Blyde River Canyon. A perfect closure of a fantastic journey.
Again, so much thanks for arranging this fabulous trip, Yvonne.”
